At the beginning of the 1950’s, the small Japanese firm Aires Camera Company of Tokyo put into production a small number of 6x6 twin lens reflex (TLR) cameras, the Airesflex line, equipped with Seikosha or Copal shutters and most with Coral lenses – but some also equipped with lenses produced by Olympus (Zuiko) and Nikkor. The company then decided to produce a new line of 35mm rangefinder cameras. Therefore, the Aires 35 line of cameras was born in 1954 and came equipped with Seikosha Rapid or Seikosha MX central shutters with speeds to 1/500 second and with its lens engraved with the "Coral" name. The first Aires model 35-I was a viewfinder camera (no rangefinder) and had an f/3.5 lens. At nearly the same time, Aires introduced the Aires 35-II model which included a coupled rangefinder and a somewhat faster f/3.2 lens. For the first time in Japan, the Aires 35-II came equipped with a bright frame in the viewfinder for the exact determination of the exposed view. The successive model Aires 35-IIA came with a brighter f/2.8 lens. The Aires 35-III model followed in 1955, equipped with a more luminous lens, the H-Coral 45mm f/2, and with a new modern body including a fast film advance lever replacing the obsolete winding knob. In order to characterize the number of lens elements in the naming of their lenses, Aires used the alphabetical code of Nippon Kogaku (Nikon), Q for four elements, P for five, H for six, S for seven. The Aires 35-IIIA was offered in 1956, and was the same as the 35-III but with a more modest Q-Coral 45mm f/2.8 lens and with the Seikosha MXL shutter which utilized the light-value method of setting the aperture and speed. In 1957 the Aires 35-IIIB model appeared that had a modest Q-Coral 45mm f/3.2 lens and also there came into production the model of light-value equipped Aires-IIIL, like the IIIA but with a significantly faster lens, the H-Coral 45mm f/1.9. In 1958 the 35-IIIS model was introduced with a modified body and more highly equipped with a yet faster lens, the H-Coral 45mm f/1.8 with an uncoupled exposure meter viewed in the view-finder, with a selenium photoelectric cell on the upper left portion of the face of the camera, and so was established the basis for the most legitimate Aires model – the Aires 35V.
