Canon EOS 500N (1996-1999)

Canon EOS 500N (1996-1999)
#418
This photo is from the copy I own

History and technical features

The Canon EOS 500N is also known as the EOS Rebel G in the Americas or the New EOS Kiss in Japan. Sometimes it's referred to as the EOS Kiss 2 as it followed the release of the EOS Kiss in Japan. This camera was released in 1996 and replaced the EOS 500. The Japanese version of the camera had the date back as standard. Its successor was the EOS-300 / REBEL2000 / Kiss III, released in 1999.

There are not too many changes in this model compared to the original. A few new features include compatibility with ETTL type flash. It still has the same 1/90 of a sec sync speed of the previous model, but when equipped with a Canon Speedlight such as the 380EX, 220EX it can be used at 1/2000 of a sec. Focus has improved a bit as as a AF assist light is now available. Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB) can be use from -2 to ++2 in 1/2 stop increments. The command dial now has a easier to access night scene mode. The body is able to use the BP-8 vertical grip that can also accept four AA batteries.

The Canon EOS Rebel G is a perfectly competent, all-plastic 35mm SLR film camera that works with all Canon autofocus (EOS) lenses. It's a plastic camera with a plastic lens mount and a mirror prism, so it weighs nothing!

The Rebel G works great with IS lenses, and everything except Canon's EF-S lenses for small-format digital cameras (or the ancient FD lenses for manual focus cameras that went obsolete in 1986).

It first winds the film to the end, and then shoots the frames in reverse order. Its frame counter always shows you the frames remaining as it counts backwards.

All the hot lenses you buy for your 1D X and 5D Mark III, like the 14mm II, fisheyes and super-teles, all are 100% compatible — and you can buy a Rebel G body for one-half of one percent of the cost of a 1DS Mk III body.

The Rebel G was an inexpensive film camera. Its advantage is that it weighs nothing and works great. It shoots in all exposure modes and has a modern evaluative metering system.

Pop on a pro lens like the 16-35mm f/2.8 L II, and the package is still light enough to throw around your neck all day.

The Rebel G feels like a toy, but it's beauty is that it doesn't weigh anything. It's an easy camera to knock around all day, and brings back great results, even on Fuji Velvia 50 slide film.

The only gotha is that the finder is a super-light penta-mirror type, so the finder isn't quite as big, sharp or as contrasty as a pro film camera. If I shot this camera all day, every day I'd want a better finder for my convenience, but as a knock around camera, it's great.

This EOS Rebel G replaced the EOS Rebel XS (EOS 500 or EOS Kiss) which was introduced in September 1993. The 1993 EOS Rebel XS should not be confused with the Digital Rebel XS that was introduced in August 2008.

The EOS Rebel 2000 (EOS 300 or EOS Kiss III) replaced this EOS Rebel G in April, 1999.

Canon EOS 3000 (1999)

Canon EOS 3000 (1999)
#397
This photo is from the copy I own

History and technical features

A compact, lightweight, low-priced SLR camera. Successor to the EOS5000, but with greatly expanded basic functions. The camera incorporates the Mode Dial and most other basic features of the EOS Kiss/EOS REBEL XS/EOS500 and includes six-zone evaluative metering linked to three focusing points. In addition, the flash is linked to the measurement point so that during shooting the flash out-put level is constantly adjusted for optimum exposure control. For reasons of cost, the flash unit is manual pop-up/retractable head type. The EOS3000 is compatible with system accessories for the Kiss and New Kiss. The high-quality design has a feel of genuine elegance.

The EOS 3000 is an autofocus SLR for 35mm film introduced by Canon in 1999. It was sold as the EOS 88 in Asia. (It was not sold in the US.) The pentamirror viewfinder and manually-activated popup flash helped keep this a lower-cost model; but a full range of autoexposure modes were included, including off-the-film flash exposure setting. Film transport is motorized and the camera requires two 3-volt CR123 lithium batteries to operate.

Canon EOS 1000FN (1992)

Canon EOS 1000FN (1992)
#382
This photo is from the copy I own

History and technical features

Two years after debut of the highly successful original EOS 1000F/Rebel. Canon introduced the EOS-1000QD/Rebel II in April, 1992. The Company adopted the same philosophy of the predecessor with two separate models in either a choice of basic body or one with a built-in flash version. Similarly, two separate designations were used for US (Rebel II (QD) & Rebel S II (QD) and other markets (EOS-1000N & EOS-1000FN). Apparently, some great features found in earlier EOS-10s & EOS-100/Elan QD was deployed in this second generation Rebel where a silent film advance and rewind mechanism was used in its design (the noise reduction for film advance has significantly improved by approx. 40% and 35% in rewinding but infrared system used in EOS-10S was not used). Wel, the silent waves camera operation in some of these EOS bodies also work efficiently with the emergence of the second generation of micro-USM lenses. That is not all it has to offer, an improved AF performance and microcomputer of the camera has improved AF speed 50% faster than any of the earlier EOS-1000/Rebel QD models. Well, generally, I used to separate the original and second series via its new vertical-travel, focal-plane electronic shutter, which has an extended shutter speed range from 30 sec. to 1/2000 now (the original rebel has 1/000 top speed, but the sync speed of both series are still limiting to rather disappointing 1/90 sec). Another improvement is the incorporation of a popular redeye prevention system with the 1000FN/Rebel SII QD models.
Other notable improvements over previous models are a slightly more powerful (GNO 14 as compared with 12) flash output for the built in flash for applicable models and a built-in soft focus mode. Errr ... there is also a choice of music selections (with beeper and selectable musical melodies by Vivaldi, Beethoven and Bach) when self-timer is activated during count down. In the case of the soft focus mode (similar to Minolta's soft focus program card), it is not running optically (you can use an EF lens with similar effect) but on both the EOS-1000FN/Rebel SII QD, It works by taking two images on the same film frame in rapid succession, shooting one sharp and then defocusing the lens for the second one (the ratio can be adjusted in 1:1 and 1:2). However, one discomforting part in the design of the camera is still centered around the black EF reinforced plastic lense bayonet mount. Although the camera is primarily designed for mass amateur users, where presumably owners may not always be frequently changing lenses, but the cleverly stealth black lense bayonet mount is one area that might raise some doubt over durability issue. The metering and exposure control modes provide is extensive enough for anyone to make good use of them for tackling any photographic situations. The camera has a flexible exposure control in shutter priority AE, aperture priority AE, intelligent program AE, four PIC image Modes, depth-of-field priority AE TTL, A-TTL flash program AE and metered manual via the use of a composite 6-zone SPC photosensor, provides fail-safe evaluative metering, and center partial metering for tricky lighting metering.
Other secondary control includes ±2-step exposure compensation (in 1/2-step increments) and a more conveniently to use AE-Lock. One advantage of the upgrade to this popular EOS body is, since most of the controls are designed and located almost the same manner with many other Canon, user may easily get accustomed to this camera. Although it is not exactly a high-end spec EOS SLR, but it serves its purpose well to provide a good, reasonably well finished camera body to tab into the huge EOS photographic system.

Remarks:

* Probably the first of the EOS bodies that produced outside Japan (Canon's plant in Taiwan).
* These cameras are quiet versions of the earlier EOS-1000, and features new functions such as soft-focus mode and musical self-timer.
* Model-specific Specifications
* Built-in flash: Manual retractable, redeye reduction mode, with automatic firing mode (when necessary), GNO 14 (ISO100, m) (1000S QD, 1000FN/1000FN QD, 1000 QD-P) However, note that only forced firing is possible on REBEL SII/ REBEL SII QD. The EOS-1000N and REBEL II/REBEL II QD do not have a built-in flash.
* AF Illuminator: Models with built-in flash support the AF Illuminator.
* QD models are provided with five imprint date items (including imprint OFF).
* Panorama shooting on the QD-P is by panorama adapter PA-1000. A panorama frame is also attached to the focusing screen. External identifications are indicated by the red outlines. Other features remain literally unchanged.

Canon EOS 10QD (1990)
#324
This photo is from the copy I own

History and technical features

The Canon EOS 10 is an autofocus 35mm SLR introduced in 1990. The model name was EOS 10S in the Americas, and EOS 10QD in Japan. There was a commemorative metallic-silver version introduced in 1991 to mark Canon's 60 millionth 35mm camera sold.

The improvements over the original EOS cameras are a newly improved autofocus sensor. Focus modes include One-Shot AF for non moving subjects and AI Servo AF for moving subjects. It is able to detect and switch automatically between the autofocus modes. Shutter ranges from 30 sec. to 1/4000 sec., with B. X-sync at 1/125 sec. Similar to the EOS 750, is has a built-in flash with a guide number 12 (at ISO 100). It uses one 2CR5 lithium battery and weighs approx 625g for the body without battery.

Marketed March 1990

Original Price 140,000 yen (w/EF 35-135mm f/4-5.6 USM),
90,000 yen (body)
This camera introduced the newly-developed, Multi-BASIS AF sensor which provided three autofocusing points.

One-Shot AF and predictive AI Servo AF are featured as AF modes. In the Full Auto mode, the camera detects whether the subject is still or moving with signals received from the Multi-BASIS. The AF mode is then set automatically.

The three focusing points are red LEDs in the viewfinder’s image area. They are easy to see and any focusing point can be selected manually with a button and dial. A bar-code book was also provided to enter the bar-code for camera settings needed to achieve the effects shown in the book’s sample photos.

Canon EOS 300 (1999-2002)

Canon EOS 300 (1999-2002)
#75
Esta fotografia é do exemplar que possuo.

Características

The Canon EOS 300 (EOS Kiss III in Japan, EOS Rebel 2000 in North America) is a consumer-level 35mm single-lens reflex camera, produced by Canon of Japan from April 1999 until September 2002 as part of their EOS system. Designed under the supervision of Yasuhiro Morishita, the camera was intended as a replacement for the Canon EOS 500N. The camera was a success for Canon, selling exceedingly well and dominating its market sector until it was replaced by the EOS 300V (Rebel Ti, Kiss 5). Canon EOS 300 won European Imaging and Sound Association Award 1999-2000. Like other low-priced SLRs of the time, the EOS 300 used a pentamirror viewfinder instead of a pentaprism, and had a polycarbonate body.

The autofocus capabilities of this camera were identical to Canon's much more expensive Elan 7 with six single-line CMOS sensors surrounding a central cross-type sensor.

The EOS 300 should not be confused with the later Canon EOS 300D (EOS Digital Rebel in the US and EOS Kiss Digital in Japan), a popular entry-level digital SLR from 2003.

Fonte: Wikipedia

Ultra-Compact, lightweight and high-quality SLR camera. Successor to New EOS Kiss/REBEL G/500N. Based on the concept of “easier to use and more comfortable” than the former model, it is smaller and lighter weight. It also has a higher performance AF system, exposure control and other basic features. A seven focusing-point wide-view AF system is used instead of the conventional three focusing-point AF. The focusing speed is equivalent to that of the EOS 55/ELAN II E/50E. This camera has 35-zone evaluative metering instead of the conventional 6-zone metering, E-TTL flash exposure control linked to an active focusing point, and other basic features, such as easy depth of field preview , higher speed of 1.5 fps film advance, shorter viewfinder black-out time, mid-roll film rewind button and a wireless remote control (Japanese model only). The camera is compact, but the command dial, the main dial, an external LCD display, and a small, yet comfortable grip ensure a good handling of the camera. The camera body is two-tone silver and black. The Battery Pack PB-200 for size-AA batteries with a vertical-grip shutter button is separately available (4,500 yen). New lenses marketed at the same time are: EF28-80mm f/3.5- 5.6 V USM, EF28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 II (export only), EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM and EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 III (export only).

The black model was introduced in Japanese market in September, 2000.

Fonte: Canon Camera Museum

The Canon EOS 300 was introduced in 1999. The branding EOS Rebel 2000 was used in the North American market. Date versions are also available.
The camera was known as the EOS Kiss III in Japan. Similar to the previous Japanese distributed EOS cameras, they typically have the QD / Date feature standard, often with a panorama masked feature as well. This particular model also has a built in remote control sensor that is not present in American and worldwide models.
A slightly improved version was released in 2001 for the Japanese market called EOS Kiss III L, but it is also often called EOS Kiss 3 L, to avoid confusion between characters I and L. The differences is that the LCD is backlit, also includes the RC-5 remote control.
This model is the entry level of the consumer lineup and has a safety feature that shoots the film backwards; it goes into the canister instead of out, thus reducing inadvertent exposures ruining the entire roll if the back is ajar. It is not compatible with IR film, as it uses IR light to track frame spacing. CR2 batteries are used for power while most of the mid-range EOS cameras uses 2CR5. For other battery options this camera supports battery grip pack BP200, easing portrait orientation with an additional shutter as well as allowing it to use of more common 4X AA batteries.
