Canon EOS 1000FN (1992)

Canon EOS 1000FN (1992)
#382
This photo is from the copy I own

History and technical features

Two years after debut of the highly successful original EOS 1000F/Rebel. Canon introduced the EOS-1000QD/Rebel II in April, 1992. The Company adopted the same philosophy of the predecessor with two separate models in either a choice of basic body or one with a built-in flash version. Similarly, two separate designations were used for US (Rebel II (QD) & Rebel S II (QD) and other markets (EOS-1000N & EOS-1000FN). Apparently, some great features found in earlier EOS-10s & EOS-100/Elan QD was deployed in this second generation Rebel where a silent film advance and rewind mechanism was used in its design (the noise reduction for film advance has significantly improved by approx. 40% and 35% in rewinding but infrared system used in EOS-10S was not used). Wel, the silent waves camera operation in some of these EOS bodies also work efficiently with the emergence of the second generation of micro-USM lenses. That is not all it has to offer, an improved AF performance and microcomputer of the camera has improved AF speed 50% faster than any of the earlier EOS-1000/Rebel QD models. Well, generally, I used to separate the original and second series via its new vertical-travel, focal-plane electronic shutter, which has an extended shutter speed range from 30 sec. to 1/2000 now (the original rebel has 1/000 top speed, but the sync speed of both series are still limiting to rather disappointing 1/90 sec). Another improvement is the incorporation of a popular redeye prevention system with the 1000FN/Rebel SII QD models.
Other notable improvements over previous models are a slightly more powerful (GNO 14 as compared with 12) flash output for the built in flash for applicable models and a built-in soft focus mode. Errr ... there is also a choice of music selections (with beeper and selectable musical melodies by Vivaldi, Beethoven and Bach) when self-timer is activated during count down. In the case of the soft focus mode (similar to Minolta's soft focus program card), it is not running optically (you can use an EF lens with similar effect) but on both the EOS-1000FN/Rebel SII QD, It works by taking two images on the same film frame in rapid succession, shooting one sharp and then defocusing the lens for the second one (the ratio can be adjusted in 1:1 and 1:2). However, one discomforting part in the design of the camera is still centered around the black EF reinforced plastic lense bayonet mount. Although the camera is primarily designed for mass amateur users, where presumably owners may not always be frequently changing lenses, but the cleverly stealth black lense bayonet mount is one area that might raise some doubt over durability issue. The metering and exposure control modes provide is extensive enough for anyone to make good use of them for tackling any photographic situations. The camera has a flexible exposure control in shutter priority AE, aperture priority AE, intelligent program AE, four PIC image Modes, depth-of-field priority AE TTL, A-TTL flash program AE and metered manual via the use of a composite 6-zone SPC photosensor, provides fail-safe evaluative metering, and center partial metering for tricky lighting metering.
Other secondary control includes ±2-step exposure compensation (in 1/2-step increments) and a more conveniently to use AE-Lock. One advantage of the upgrade to this popular EOS body is, since most of the controls are designed and located almost the same manner with many other Canon, user may easily get accustomed to this camera. Although it is not exactly a high-end spec EOS SLR, but it serves its purpose well to provide a good, reasonably well finished camera body to tab into the huge EOS photographic system.

Remarks:

* Probably the first of the EOS bodies that produced outside Japan (Canon's plant in Taiwan).
* These cameras are quiet versions of the earlier EOS-1000, and features new functions such as soft-focus mode and musical self-timer.
* Model-specific Specifications
* Built-in flash: Manual retractable, redeye reduction mode, with automatic firing mode (when necessary), GNO 14 (ISO100, m) (1000S QD, 1000FN/1000FN QD, 1000 QD-P) However, note that only forced firing is possible on REBEL SII/ REBEL SII QD. The EOS-1000N and REBEL II/REBEL II QD do not have a built-in flash.
* AF Illuminator: Models with built-in flash support the AF Illuminator.
* QD models are provided with five imprint date items (including imprint OFF).
* Panorama shooting on the QD-P is by panorama adapter PA-1000. A panorama frame is also attached to the focusing screen. External identifications are indicated by the red outlines. Other features remain literally unchanged.

Olympus Go

Olympus Go
#343
This photo is from the copy I own

History and technical features

During the mid-to-late '80s Olympus lost ground to its competitors in the SLR field as autofocus took off. Research and development spending was focussed on high-selling compact point and shoots. Although the company did eventually release an autofocus SLR system it was not a serious challenge to Minolta, Nikon or Canon. Olympus changed its orientation and pioneered the concept of the "bridge" camera (an auto-everything SLR with fixed zoom lens) with the IS series. In the early '90s, Olympus had significant success with the compact autofocus Stylus (or µ[mju:] ) line. It carried on this success at the turn of the century into the digital field, as film camera production was ended in 2005. When the digital market took off with the launch of reasonably affordable, compact 2.3 megapixel cameras for consumers, there were only two real options for photographers — the Nikon Coolpix or the Olympus Camedia ranges. Before the availability of affordable (sub-$5k) digital SLRs, Olympus' E series of fixed-lens SLRs, evolved from the earlier analogue bridge cameras, was very popular among serious photographers.

The launch of cheaper digital SLRs saw Olympus lose ground again among serious photographers, but in 2003 the E series was developed into an innovative interchangeable-lens SLR system. Without the huge autofocus lens catalogue of Nikon and Canon, Olympus was free to build its system without concessions to an older 35mm-based system. Olympus is the champion of the Four-Thirds lens mount system with smaller sensor rather than the APS-sized sensors Konica Minolta, Canon and Nikon put into their DSLR bodies, which are derived from 35mm film cameras. This allowed Olympus to design its bodies and lenses specifically for digital use. The first model of its Four-Thirds E-series of DSLRs was the Olympus E-1. It was the first professional model of the modern type compact DSLRs for interchangeable lenses. Olympus is slow in evolving its professional DSLR line but fast in delivery of new consumer DSLRs of its E-line.

Along with Panasonic, Olympus has also launched a compact camera system based on the Micro Four-Thirds standard. This has half the flange focal distance of the orignal Four-Thirds, 6mm smaller throat size, and enables compact cameras with DSLR image quality. For this it revived its famous Olympus Pen brand. The new Pens are finderless compact digicams for Micro-Four-Thirds lenses, but including an accessory shoe where an electronic eye-level finder can be attached instead of a flash.

The company took its present name of Olympus Corporation (オリンパス株式会社) in 2003, and it continues to innovate and to challenge other manufacturers to do so by the incorporation of features such as 'Live-View', tilt/swivel LCDs and full user control over the noise filter on its 'E-System' range of DLSRs.

Revelations about the top management of Olympus made world headlines in late 2011, regarding accounting practices designed to disguise earlier losses.[42] As of February 2012, investigation continues into what is commonly referred to as a scandal, and has led to resignations and arrests of Olympus officials. These events cast doubt over the future of the corporation's camera division (whose earnings had not matched those of the medical-products arm); yet new Olympus camera and lens introductions continue.

A plastic cheap and nasty dating from about 1985. Some might say it takes arty photos, others would say terrible photos. It was a 135 successor to the Diana type cameras, fixed shutter speed, a strange expanding slit for diaphragm and fixed focus.

Premier PC600

Premier PC600
#150
Esta fotografia é do exemplar que possuo

Características

The Premier PC600 is a nice black 35mm point-and-shoot plastic camera made by Premier. The shifter below its non-focusable F3.5 38mm lens opens or closes the shifting doors which protect the front elements of the lens and the reverse Galilean bright frame viewfinder. It's also the on/off switch of the camera. Below the built-in flash is another shifter to switch on the flash. A third shifter is the film speed selector to choose between ISO speeds 100(/200?), 400 and 1600. Between this selector and the lens is the small window of the CdS meter which maybe has some automatic exposure control function but at least controls the underenlightment signal. The automatic film advance works only after pressing the shutter release. Thus it's necessary to press the release button on the camera's top twice after laying in the film and closing the film chamber. Afterwards the release button has to be pressed just once for each exposure. Another feature on the top is the window of the mechanical exposure counter which is reset automatically after film rewind. The film rewind is activated when reaching the film end. On the back is the film chamber door with a little window to show the presence of a film. Above the door are the viewfinder ocular together with the flash ready lamp and the red underenlightment indicator LED which is activated bay half-pressing the shutter release. On the camera's bottom is the door for the battery chamber. The camera needs two AA batteries.

The Premier PC600 is a 35mm point-and-shoot camera made by Premier of Taiwan. It has a fixed-focus 38 mm f/3.5 lens. Below the lens is a switch which opens or closes the lens and viewfinder covers (it's also the on/off switch of the camera). Below the built-in flash is another switch for the flash. A third shifter is the film speed selector to choose between ISO speeds 100/200 (the same switch position), 400 and 1600. Between this selector and the lens is the small window of the CdS meter which presumably has some automatic exposure control function but at least controls the low-light warning signal, a red LED by the viewfinder eyepiece, which lights when the shutter release is half-pressed.
The film is advanced automatically after the shutter is released, and rewinds automatically when the end of the film is reached. The power advance is the only way to advance the film: thus it's necessary to press the release button on the camera's top twice during loading, after laying in the film cassette and closing the film chamber. There is a window in the film chamber door to show the presence (and type) of film. There is a frame counter window in the top of the camera; this resets automatically after the film is rewound and taken out. Above the door are the viewfinder eyepiece together with the flash ready lamp and the red low-light indicator LED which is activated by half-pressing the shutter release. The camera needs two AA batteries, which are loaded in the bottom of the camera.
The grip and back of the camera are black in every example seen. The front has been seen in black, as pictured here, silver and red.
