History and technical features

Development of the Fed-3 (b), new winding lever, rewind crank. Accesory shoe screwed on top of top plate, rather than in a depression.

Now I know I’m really crazy. This is the very camera about which I said “I know it’s got a great lens but it’s just so UGLY!” At the time I couldn’t imagine anyone actually walking around with one in public. I’ve looked at it enough now that it’s grown on me considerably — while it’s not exactly a handsome camera, it’s more agreeable in person than pictures suggest. How’s that for a compliment? This is the basic 5B, there is another version of the 5 with an uncoupled selenium light meter. There is also a model year variation with different Cyrillic lettering on the nameplate and gridded pleather covering like the FED 3B that is even less attractive than this model. Note – though this model is commonly referred to as a 5B the letter is really equivalent to an English V, so you will see it referred to as a 5V by native Russian speakers.

Where the FED 3B feels like a solid shooter, the 5 feels like a cheap knock-off. The body is slightly taller but it weighs about the same, and feels noticeably cheesier, like it’s made of cheaper or thinner metal. Even the lens mount feels a little cheap. Aluminum instead of steel? Maybe. Odd about the extra height, I can see about 1/4″ of space under that tall top cap, wonder if it was simply to make room for the hot shoe wires or some other manufacturing shortcut? At any rate, of the series, this is definitely the FED to take to the muddy soccer game in the rain, the one to schlep to the windy beach for those lovely sunset shots when you’d leave a more collectible camera at home.

See my other FEDs and the Links below for the background on this beast, it does indeed have a great lens and that’s really the bottom line. Touted as the best Russian-made LTM lens ever, the rare-earth impregnated Industar-61 L/D came standard on the FED 4 and 5. The common sentiment is that for the price what you’re getting is a world-class lens with an ugly camera-shaped rear lens cap. I haven’t used it enough myself to say whether I think it’s better than the earlier Industar-61 or the Industar-26M, which are both excellent.

I’ll skip the somewhat sordid history of the FED. Suffice it to say that the FED factory in Kharkov was an orphanage-turned-work-commune named for Felix E. Dzerzhinsky, founder of the original Soviet Secret Police. It’s a very interestsing story, and you can read all about it on this excellent page, just make sure to come back when you’re done (I love that site!). Oh and put your wallet away or you’ll find yourself off bidding on FEDs before you know it. One FED is never enough!

Características

The FED-5 (often marked in cyrillic, with several variations of font, ФЭД 5 {upper-case} or фэд 5 {lower-case}) is a 35mm rangefinder camera produced by the FED factory in the Ukrainian city of Kharkov from 1977 until 1996.

The FED-5 is an updated FED-4, with cleaner lines to the top, a pop-up rewind knob in place of the thumb-wheel, a hot shoe, restyled film reminder/frame counter and meter rings, and the meter scale repositioned and converted from a match-needle to an EV-scaled device where the user manually transfers the meter reading to the calculator.

There are 7 types and 10 sub-types of the FED-5.

FED-3 (1961-1979)

FED-3 (1961-1979)

Esta fotografia é do exemplar que possuo.

Características

The FED 3 is a Ukrainian rangefinder camera inspired by classic Leicas. Over two million were produced between 1961-79. It takes 35mm film. The FED 3 is an evolution of the FED 2 and the dimensions of the two bodies are identical. The top deck is modified because the FED 3 has to have a shorter rangefinder base to make room for the slow-speed mechanism. Shutter speeds are 1 sec, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500s and "B". In common with many Soviet-era cameras, the shutter must be cocked before the speed is altered.

There are four definable models in the FED 3 series.

  • FED 3a was introduced in 1961. It retained most of the FED 2 features, including the mushroom-shaped advance knob. The rewind knob is larger. The diopter is no longer adjusted by a lever but is adjusted by the ring over the viewfinder.
  • FED 3b was introduced in 1963. It has a film advance lever and a flat top deck. It had no strap lugs, but an ever-ready case was originally available. The FED 3b is usually fitted with an Industar 26M or Industar 61 lens. These are interchangeable with other lenses with an M39 mount, but are not 100% compatible with the Leica standard.
  • FED 3L was introduced along with the 3b in 1963, and has a body like the 3a but a different shutter speed knob. The knob on a 3L resembles the ones on the FED 3b; the speeds are engraved on a plate beneath the knob instead of on the knob itself. The shutter speed plate is clipped where the top deck steps down. Usually fitted with an Industar 61 lens.
  • FED 3L/D is a FED 3L with a multi-coated Industar 61 L/D containing Lanthane.

Fonte: Camerapedia

The Fed-3 is a new model which keeps the old body from the Fed-2. It has a new short base rangefinder assembly with a new shutter. The shutter already has slow speeds. The range finder cam now has its axis of rotation on the rewind side and diopter adjustment is made by rotating the view finder. The engraving is either the Single Cyrillic script " FED-3" or the dual engraving on export models with "MADE IN USSR" on the back.

FED-1 (1934-1955)

FED-1 (1934-1955)
Esta fotografia é do exemplar que possuo.

Características

The original FED is a 35mm film Rangefinder camera, manufactured by F.E. Dzerzhinsky factory, in Kharkov, Ukraine, former USSR. The original FED is also known as FED NKVD, FED-1 and FED-S. All original FED cameras produced between 1934-55, quantity 626847.

The FED camera was introduced in 1934 by factory of the Dzerzhinsky Commune in Kharkov, Ukraine, former USSR. FED are the initials for F.E. Dzerzhinsky, the founder of the NKVD, in honor of him the camera was named.

The NKVD was the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs (= Народный комиссариат внутренних дел Narodnyy komissariat vnutrennikh del, НКВД (=NKVD ), a public and secret police organization of the Soviet Union later known as the KGB.

The factory was originally an orphanage workforce was based on youths living and working together in a commune.

After the groundbreaking introduction of the Leica II in 1932, Soviet leaders stopped the import of photographic equipment and set the FED factory to its task of creating a Leica of their own. Only 18 months later, in 1934, the FED factory began churning out its first clone of the Leica II rangefinder camera. Since then, they have produced millions of cameras, some good and some not so good. The early FED is a true copy of the Leica II, itself only introduced less than two years earlier. The FED-1 was continuously improved and produced in great quantities until 1955 at which point series production of the FED-2 commenced.

The variations of the engravings on the FED camera tops make it worth a special mention, reflecting the changes within the Soviet Union.

As with many early Leica copies, the fact that Leitz utilized non-metric production equipment escaped most of the early camera manufactures, the consequence being slightly finer thread pitch of the M39 mount, of which the FED is an early example. The flange to film plane distance, which Leitz standardised in 1932, also differs slightly on the early FED cameras. Each lens had to be matched to the camera for correct focusing. Later production FED cameras from 1950s were given lens mounts with the correct LTM pitch, and most can be found with the proper lens register as well. From early on, a few oddities exist as well, including a counterfeit Leica II, discovered by the German army when occupying the Kharkov factory in 1941. However, the finish alone reveals the forgery. Considerable effort has been put in to revealing the story about this fascinating camera, and it is well documented and covered in articles and books. Special mention of Oscar Fricke, whose findings were published already in 1979, should suffice here.

According to FED classification of Alaxander Komarov in Fotoua, there are 14 types and many sub-types of the original FED cameras. This classification is an improved version of Aidas Pikiotas' classification in SovietCams . In the latter all original FED cameras are designated as FED-1, and types are from A to G, with many sub-types.

  • Lens: FED 50mm f/3.5 (ФЭД M/M), collapseable
  • Mount: Leica 39M screw mount, filter size 32mm slip-on
  • Aperture: f/3.5-f/16, setting: ring with a lever and scale on front of the lens
  • Focus range: 1.25-20m +inf.
  • Focusing: Matching yellow rangefinder images in the rangefinder window, left one on the back of the top plate, lever and distance scale on the back side of the lens, Focus lever locks on infinity

  • Setting: Old style shutter dial, on the top plate, lift and set, turns when cocking
  • Shutter release: old style with short collar
  • Viewfinder: Simple Galilean finder

  • FED 3L was introduced along with the 3b in 1963, and has a body like the 3a but a different shutter speed knob. The knob on a 3L resembles the ones on the FED 3b; the speeds are engraved on a plate beneath the knob instead of on the knob itself. The shutter speed plate is clipped where the top deck steps down. Usually fitted with an Industar 61 lens.
  • FED 3L/D is a FED 3L with a multi-coated Industar 61 L/D containing Lanthane.

The Fed-3 (a) is a new model which keeps the old body from the Fed-2.

Modelo

A minha é uma FED-3 do segundo modelo (FED-3b) segundo o site USSRPhoto.com:

Revue 3 2nd version (Fed 3b).

Another serie of the Revue 3, made by Fed for Foto-Quelle from the Fed 3b. The body reads "Revue 3" in serigraphy. It was engraved on the precedent serie. The lens is always the Fed/Industar 61, without lanthanum (F421 by JLP).
This camera is not so easy to find.

Tem o n.º de série (corpo) 558436 e de lente 8772967.

O termo "Revue 3" é praticamente invisível (apagado pelo uso ou por anterior proprietário para evitar desvalorização por não estar gravado "FED-3"?)

FED-2 Modelo D (1959-1968)

FED-2 Modelo D
Esta fotografia é do exemplar que possuo.
#30
Características

The FED-2 (ФЭД) is 35mm film rangefinder camera made by FED and produced between 1955-70 with the quantity of 1.632.600 units.

It is a new design that is quite different from the FED-1. It has a longer rangefinder base (67mm), a combined viewfinder and rangefinder window, adjustable diopter for the viewing window, a self-timer (later revisions), and a detachable back for film-loading.

Fed-2 was produced fairly long time and offered with many types and several different features, like the engravings, lenses, shutter speeds, self-timer etc.

There are 12 types and 17 sub-types of the camera

The FED-2 is a completely new design with many new features. It introduces a new body with solid stripes top and bottom and a removable back that locks onto the camera with 2 keys. This assembly is die cast and not machined and has shoulder strap lugs. The rangefinder assembly has also been completely redesigned. It is now a 67mm extra long base combined range finder and viewfinder. There is a pointed rangefinder cam with the rotation axis on the wind side. There is a diopter adjustment lever under the rewind knob. There is also a new shutter.

Operation

To load the film, two locks in the base of the camera need to be turned. The entire back and bottom can then be removed as a single unit, allowing easy access to the film chamber. Standard 35mm film cassettes are used, with film being wound onto a removable take-up spool (the latter often becomes difficult to remove on older cameras). Winding the film cocks the shutter and forwards the frame-counter simultaneously. The FED 2 has a manual frame-counter located below the wind-on knob, which must be reset by hand when loading film.

Focusing

Matching yellow rangefinder images in the viewfinder, distance scale and ring on the lens, w/ DOF scale

Shutter

Rubberized silk double cloth curtain, horizontal focal plane, speeds: 1/30 - 1/500 +B, setting: dial on the top plate, turns when winding, lift and turn for setting
Shutter release: on the top plate, with a collar for re-wind release, w/ cable release socket
Cocking knob: also winds the film, on the right of the top plate
Frame counter: beneath the cocking knob, additive type, manual setting
After detaching the back, two screws on the underside of the camera allow you to adjust the spring tension and change the shutter speeds, which may have become slow over time. As with similar cameras, it's important to cock the shutter before operating the shutter speed dial. Failing to do so may harm the mechanism. When firing, this dial wil rotate. After recocking, the speed set will be indicated correctly again.

Lens

Industar-26m 50mm f/2.8 (ИНДУСТАР-26m), red engraving "П" means coated
Mount: M39 Screw mount, filter thread: 35mm
Lens release: simply un-screw
Aperture: f/2.8-f/22 setting: ring and dial on the lens
Focus range: 1-20m +inf.
The Fed takes 39mm screw lenses. The one shown above is a 5cm collapsible Fed lens. Lots of Feds come with Industar lenses. On the collapsible Fed lens, the aperture is set on the front and focusing is done with a lever near the body. The rangefinder is coupled to the lens. The field of view in the viewfinder is that of a 5cm lens. For other focal lengths, a separate turret viewfinder was placed on the accessory shoe.

Viewfinder

Coupled rangefinder/viewfinder, green glass, very clear
Diopter correction lever: beneath the re-wind knob

Other features

Re-wind knob: turns when winding, on the left of the top plate
Re-wind release: a milled colar around the shutter release, П = re-wind, C = wind
Flash PC socket: on front of the top plate, X sync 1/30
Cold-shoe
Memory dial : on the winding knob
Self-timer: activates with a small knob above the lever, on front of the camera
Back cover: removable with the bottom plate, opens by two levers on the bottom plate
Film loading: special take-up spool, removable
Tripod socket: old type, 3/8
Strap lugs
Body: metal, Weight: 620g
